Tim’s Take On Instagram – An Introduction

Moscow Russia - August 26 2014: instagram app open in the mobile phone HTC.HTC Corporation main direction rapidly developing market of smartphones. Instagram free application sharing photos and videos

Instagram is an online mobile photo-sharing, video-sharing and social networking service. Users can take pictures and videos, and share them on other social networking sites.

I joined in the spring of 2015. It has been HUGE for quite a while.

I really enjoy the concept of a social media platform dedicating itself to sharing photos especially. Videos can only be a maximum of 15 seconds long, so this platform is much different than say YouTube. There is still space under each photo or video to write what each post is about.

But to me, this is really about the visuals you are seeing. Quotes are very popular on Instagram, and many people take selfies too. Ok, almost everybody takes selfies! I still have much more to learn, and look forward to sharing my progress.

Instagram has a great “Instagram Basics” help section with many different categories of information. For those of you just getting started, there just happens to be a “Getting Started” link too 🙂 Click on the “Instagram Basics” link to get to the “Getting Started” link.

All of the information can be seen by clicking this link.

Top 3 Instagram Tips For Newbies

  1. Use Hashtags – Hashtags are essentially a search item that you type in at the top of the Instagram main page. You just type “#” in front of the word (no space) and see what comes up. Once the search returns results, you can see how many times that word has been used before on posts, and other variations of it. The more popular the hashtags you use, the greater the chances that people see your content.  It’s ok to use multiple hashtags per post. Some people use.. like A LOT of them and that is ok. If you don’t use hashtags, only the people who follow you would see your posts. Why not maximize your exposure and use hashtags all the time?
  2. Get creative with post content – Even though this site is for photo and video sharing, there is still space under each upload to give a description. Put as much or little detail as you want; with links back to websites, social media profiles etc. You can normally add emojis (emoticons) to your posts (and your profile for that matter). There are a few details about emojis that you need to know. Click here for that information. This applies to comments and posts too.
    • In case you were wondering,  an emoji is a small digital image or icon used to express an idea or emotion
  3. I’m still learning, and will report back once I have a 3rd point!
